Walking in Fear and Comfort (Acts 9:31)

Last weekend I returned to preach at Christ Church London’s services in East London. Having been a pastor there for 12 years until we moved earlier this year, it was a little unusual to return as a guest speaker, but it was fun to be back!

A.W. Tozer wrote:

“If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95 percent of what we do would go on and no one would know the difference. If the Holy Spirit had been withdrawn from the New Testament church, 95 percent of what they did would stop, and everybody would know the difference.”

A.W. Tozer.

That bothers me.

Provoked by that, I preached from Acts chapter 9:

‘So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.’

(Acts 9:31)

This is the recording from the morning service, which was probably the most coherent of the two! The evening was one of those rare and precious times when God’s presence was so strong through worship that I wasn’t even sure I should dare to preach. It felt like standing on holy ground, and it’s an experience I don’t think I’ll forget for a long time!

I hope it blesses you.
